The Best Advice You'll Ever Get

The most valuable lessons we've learned will guide you through pregnancy, birth & new motherhood.

A big pat on the back to . . . us! Conceived as a Shape magazine spin-off and born in 1993, our baby was launched into the world with what was then a somewhat radical message: Women not only could stay active throughout their pregnancy, they should.

Today, that advice is positively mainstream. While we've never wavered from our original mission, along the way we also learned a lot of other valuable lessons about what it takes to have a healthy and happy pregnancy and baby.

We've learned that yes, it does take a village— starting before a child is even born. We've learned that emotional health during and after pregnancy is as important as physical; that you don't have to give up your personal style just because you're becoming a mom; that men can parent as well as women; and that you have the power and the right to do everything you can to have the kind of delivery you want. We've learned that while the amount of information out there on having, bearing and raising babies is exploding, the number of things you really need to know and do and worry about is actually quite manageable. And much, much more.

Here, we share with you the most important knowledge we've gained, starting with 15 big changes that have taken place during our magazine's lifetime. As you'll see, we've come a long way, but there's still room for improvement.

Consider yourselves lucky: Despite the progress to be made, there's never been a better time to have a baby, and we're happy to be a part of it.
