Q: I am only one month pregnant with my first child, and I’m already worried because I have heard so many stories about women having trouble losing their baby weight. I saw you on TV recently and you look great! Why do celebrities seem to bounce back so quickly after having their babies? Do you have any inside tips you can share with me?
A: Celebrities do not have special powers that make the baby weight fall off. Because their business is largely about looks and image, many hire top trainers, nutritionists, personal chefs and so on to help them reach their goals. So don’t compare yourself to the women you see on magazine covers. Because I am an athlete, I know what it takes to get in shape. I have been losing my baby weight the old fashioned way, and you can, too. The key elements are portion control, consistent exercise and a positive attitude. I eat five to six small meals a day that include lean meats, lots of veggies, grains and fresh fruit. I run three to four times a week, followed by light strength training. I admit it has been hard to stay on a consistent schedule because I have to work around my baby’s needs, my career and lack of sleep. I always expected that I would get my pregnancy weight off, but I knew it would take hard work, patience and commitment. Also, staying in great shape and avoiding excess weight gain while pregnant will help you bounce back more quickly, so start the process now!
