Anti-aging Cream

Q:

Are anti-aging creams safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding?

A:

Most anti-aging creams are elaborate moisturizers and are safe to use, says Miami Beach, Fla.-based dermatologist Stephen Mandy, M.D. Look for products that contain ingredients considered safe for pregnancy, such as vitamins C or E, antioxidants (e.g., green tea) and peptides, advises Mandy. While pregnant women should avoid anti-aging creams that contain retinol, retinoic acid, vitamin A derivatives or tazarotine (all can cause birth defects), the same products are safe for nursing mothers.
