What's Good

  • Relative to population, Atlanta has more specialty retailers of healthy/organic foods and vitamins than most places in our survey.
  • Expecting and new moms have plenty of parks: Atlanta has 124 percent more public parks than average, relative to population.
  • There are many more fertility doctors per capita here than average.
  • 18.1 percent of births statewide are attended by midwives. That's 140 percent more than average.
  • There are more fertility clinics per capita here than average-- the 3rd highest in our survey.
  • Midwifery is more widely available than most cities, with 76 percent more midwives than average.
  • Women in Atlanta are 62 percent less likely than average to smoke during pregnancy. That's the 6th lowest rate in our survey. Nationwide, about 1 out of every 12 pregnant women smokes.
  • Atlanta has lots of NICU beds, 64 percent more than average, 6th highest in our survey.
  • Hospital costs here are among the lowest in our survey.
  • The local climate is especially mild - perfect for getting out and working off pregnancy weight gain.
  • Atlanta has plenty of high-risk pediatricians, 83 percent more than average and the 9th highest in our survey.

Needs Improvement

  • State laws do not require health insurance companies to provide or offer any fertility-related services.
  • State laws require less-stringent day-care worker checks than most.
  • Atlanta babies are 20 percent more likely than average to be born with low birth weight.
  • Babies here are 13 percent more likely than average to be born prematurely.
  • According to the Urban Mobility Report from Texas A&M University, Atlanta has one of the worst commutes of any city in our survey. It takes 46 percent longer to drive the same route during rush hour than in free-flowing traffic. That puts a lot more pressure on parents rushing to day care at the end of the day.
  • There are just 4 licensed day care centers for every 1,000 children under 4 years. That's 32 percent less than average.
  • According to data from the CDC, maternal mortality in Georgia is especially high.
  • The CDC reports very high infant mortality rates for Georgia.
  • Pedestrians have a 83 percent higher than average risk of being killed by a motor vehicle--among the most dangerous in our survey.
  • Georgia has no provisions for dependent related tax breaks.
  • Compared to the number of babies born, Atlanta has 51 percent fewer lactation consultants than average.
  • Atlanta has 12 miles of stroller-friendly trails and public pathways, according to our survey of parks departments. In a per capita comparison, that's 73 percent less than the average city in our survey (10th lowest overall relative to population).
  • Atlanta's violent crime rate is 70 percent higher than average, the 3rd highest in our survey, in fact.
  • Atlanta has a 32 percent higher property crime rate than average, the 5th highest in our survey.
