What's Good

  • Relative to population, Cleveland has more specialty retailers of healthy/organic foods and vitamins than most places in our survey.
  • Pedestrians have a 81 percent lower than average risk of being killed by a motor vehicle--among the safest in our survey.
  • According to the Urban Mobility Report from Texas A&M University, Cleveland has one of the best commutes of any city in our survey. It takes only 9 percent longer to drive the same route during rush hour than in free-flowing traffic. That takes a lot of pressure off parents rushing to day care at the end of the day.
  • Cleveland has more OB-GYNs than average, the 6th highest in our survey.
  • Relative to the number of live births per year, Cleveland has 14 percent more doulas than average--that figure is the 10th highest in our survey.

Needs Improvement

  • Hospital costs here are among the highest in our survey.
  • The CDC reports very high infant mortality rates for Ohio.
  • Compared to the number of babies born, Cleveland has 69 percent fewer lactation consultants than average. That's the 10th lowest ratio in our survey.
  • There are just 5 licensed day care centers for every 1,000 children under 4 years. That's 24 percent less than average.
  • 66 percent of Cleveland mothers attempt breastfeeding. That's the 6th lowest percentage of any city in our report. Moms here are 12 percent less likely than average to try breastfeeding.
  • The local climate can be extreme - not conducive to getting out and working off pregnancy weight gain.
  • Cleveland babies are 31 percent more likely than average to be born with low birth weight.
  • There's 78 percent less public park space than average here, relative to population.
