What's Good

  • There's 37 percent more public park space than average here, relative to population.
  • Pedestrians have a 53 percent lower than average risk of being killed by a motor vehicle--among the safest in our survey.
  • Compared to the number of babies born, Columbus has 117 percent more lactation consultants than average. That's the 7th highest ratio in our survey.

Needs Improvement

  • The CDC reports very high infant mortality rates for Ohio.
  • Relative to the number of live births per year, Columbus has 58 percent fewer doulas than average--that figure is the 9th lowest in our survey.
  • There are just 5 licensed day care centers for every 1,000 children under 4 years. That's 24 percent less than average.
  • 66 percent of Columbus mothers attempt breastfeeding. That's the 7th lowest percentage of any city in our report. Moms here are 11 percent less likely than average to try breastfeeding.
