What's Good

  • There's 638 percent more public park space than average here, relative to population.
  • State laws require stringent background checks for day-care workers.
  • Hospital costs here are among the lowest in our survey.
  • According to data from the CDC, maternal mortality in Florida is especially low.
  • 10.4 percent of births statewide are attended by midwives. That's 38 percent more than average.
  • According to the Urban Mobility Report from Texas A&M University, Jacksonville has one of the best commutes of any city in our survey. It takes only 18 percent longer to drive the same route during rush hour than in free-flowing traffic. That takes a lot of pressure off parents rushing to day care at the end of the day.
  • The cost of a doctor visit is 13 percent lower than average for cities in our survey.
  • Jacksonville families are more likely than average to be able to afford a median-priced home.

Needs Improvement

  • By six months of age, 67 percent of Jacksonville babies aren't being breastfed at all. That's the 10th worst faring of any city in our report.
  • Babies here are 12 percent more likely than average to be born prematurely.
  • 10.3 percent of Jacksonville mothers breastfeed their babies exclusively (meaning no solids, formula or other liquids) for 6 months or longer as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. That's among the bottom 48 percent of cities in our survey.
  • Once Jacksonville mothers begin breastfeeding, they are 13 percent less likely than average to continue through 6 months. That's the 7th lowest level of follow-through of any city in our report.
  • Jacksonville has fewer OB-GYNs than average, the 6th lowest in our survey.
  • Pedestrians have a 64 percent higher than average risk of being killed by a motor vehicle--among the most dangerous in our survey.
  • 31 percent of babies in Florida are born via Cesarean section. That rate is 14 percent more than average, and among the highest in our survey.
