What's Good

  • Mesa's violent crime rate is 49 percent lower than average, the 7th lowest in our survey, in fact.
  • Mesa babies are 29 percent less likely than average to be born with low birth weight.
  • Arizona stands out in a measure of legislation related to cord blood education, research and related issues.
  • State laws require stringent background checks for day-care workers.
  • 22 percent of babies in Arizona are born via Cesarean section. That rate is 18 percent less than average, and among the lowest in our survey.
  • Arizona devotes more money relative to population than most states to child car-seat-check stations.
  • Pedestrians have a 51 percent lower than average risk of being killed by a motor vehicle--among the safest in our survey.
  • According to data from the CDC, maternal mortality in Arizona is especially low.

Needs Improvement

  • State laws do not require health insurance companies to provide or offer any fertility-related services.
  • Mesa lacks access to fertility clinics that offer advanced reproductive technology, as reported to the CDC.
  • Arizona has no provisions for dependent related tax breaks.
  • Air quality here is worse here than most cities in our survey. Air quality has been linked to childhood asthma and fertility rates, among other health effects.
  • Expecting and new moms have few parks: Mesa has 60 percent fewer public parks than average, relative to population.
  • Mesa has relatively few NICU beds, 83 percent less than average, 3rd lowest in our survey. Phoenix also came up short in this measure.
  • Mesa has just 3 miles of stroller-friendly park trails and pathways, according to our survey of parks departments. In a per capita comparison, that's 94 percent less than the average city in our survey (2nd lowest overall relative to population).
  • We couldn't find any high-risk pediatricians in Mesa. Phoenix doesn't have very many, either.
