What's Good

  • Relative to population, Miami has more specialty retailers of healthy/organic foods and vitamins than most places in our survey.
  • Women in Miami are 91 percent less likely than average to smoke during pregnancy. Congratulations! That's the lowest rate in our survey. Nationwide, about 1 out of every 12 pregnant women smokes.
  • Miami has 85 miles of stroller-friendly trails and public pathways, according to our survey of parks departments. In a per capita comparison, that's 109 percent more than the average city in our survey (5th highest overall relative to population).
  • 10.4 percent of births statewide are attended by midwives. That's 38 percent more than average.
  • Just 2 percent of pregnant women here receive late or inadequate prenatal care. That's the 5th best score in our survey.
  • According to data from the CDC, maternal mortality in Florida is especially low.
  • Relative to the number of live births per year, Miami has 48 percent more doulas than average--that figure is the highest in our survey.
  • State laws require stringent background checks for day-care workers.
  • The local climate is especially mild - perfect for getting out and working off pregnancy weight gain.

Needs Improvement

  • State laws do not require health insurance companies to provide or offer any fertility-related services.
  • Miami lacks access to fertility clinics that offer advanced reproductive technology, as reported to the CDC.
  • Once Miami mothers begin breastfeeding, they are 9 percent less likely than average to continue through 6 months. That's the 9th lowest level of follow-through of any city in our report.
  • Miami babies are 19 percent more likely than average to be born with low birth weight.
  • According to the Urban Mobility Report from Texas A&M University, Miami has one of the worst commutes of any city in our survey. It takes 42 percent longer to drive the same route during rush hour than in free-flowing traffic. That puts a lot more pressure on parents rushing to day care at the end of the day.
  • There's 76 percent less public park space than average here, relative to population.
  • Housing in Miami is less affordable than most places: When comparing household incomes to home values, a key measure of affordability, Miami has the 2nd lowest ratio in our survey.
  • 31 percent of babies in Florida are born via Cesarean section. That rate is 14 percent more than average, and among the highest in our survey.
  • Miami's violent crime rate is 61 percent higher than average, the 5th highest in our survey, in fact.
