Needs Improvement
- Philadelphia's violent crime rate is 49 percent higher than average, the 6th highest in our survey, in fact.
- State laws do not require health insurance companies to provide or offer any fertility-related services.
- Babies here are 10 percent more likely than average to be born prematurely.
- By six months of age, 71 percent of Philadelphia babies aren't being breastfed at all. That's the 7th poorest percentage of any city in our report.
- Housing is less affordable than average: Philadelphia families less likely than residents of other cities to be able to afford a median-priced home, even when they earn the median income.
- Hospital costs here are among the highest in our survey.
- Philadelphia babies are 35 percent more likely than average to be born with low birth weight.
- Just 57 percent of Philadelphia mothers attempt breastfeeding. That's the 4th lowest percentage of any city in our report. Moms here are 23 percent less likely than average to try breastfeeding.
- Compared to the number of babies born, Philadelphia has 69 percent fewer lactation consultants than average. That's the lowest ratio in our survey.
- Expecting and new moms have few parks for exercise or stroller time: Philadelphia has 88 percent fewer public parks than average, relative to population--the lowest ratio in our survey.
