What's in a splurge?
So what do you really get when you pay more for baby products? The same upgrades you expect in non-baby products. Premium prices often indicate sturdier materials, more functions and features, a fashion-forward design (more color choices and nicer fabrics) and sometimes a trendy brand name, says Alan Fields, co-author of Baby Bargains: Secrets to Saving 20% to 50% on Baby Furniture, Equipment, Clothes, Toys, Maternity Wear, and Much, Much More! (Windsor Peak Press, 2005).
Is it worth it? That's up to you. Value-priced products do the job and come in more colors and patterns than ever before, so you're bound to find things you like. Indulging in a splurge here and there is fun and some products may have a longer life. Make sure your most important purchases (car seat, crib, stroller and carrier) are certified for safety by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association; look for their seal on product packaging
