Does the idea of finding time for a trip to the gym make you laugh really hard these days? Whether you're in the mood for a trimester-appropriate cardio routine or a more gentle prental yoga or Pilates workout, we've got you covered. Although the following prenatal and postnatal DVDs are safe to follow in the time periods specified, check with your doctor before starting these or any other workout programs.
Prenatal: FLEX TIME
Crunch: Yoga Mama: Prenatal Yoga
The scoop Pressing play on this DVD is like stepping into a yoga studio at a famed Crunch gym: Pregnant Los Angeles yoga teacher Sue Elkind leads six other women in various stages of their pregnancies through some classic yoga poses, such as Half Sun Salutes and Downward-Facing Dog, as well as Kegel-incorporating squats.
Prenatal: MOVERS AND SHAPERS
Tracey Mallet Presents Fit for Pregnancy
The scoop Sure, Tracey Mallet is a workout DVD star and looks like one, too, but she's also a mom of two with an encouraging, friendly manner. Her three six-minute "cardio toning circuits" for the first and second trimesters and three specifically for the third trimester can be combined or done separately. Or opt for the eight-minute yoga-inspired flexibility routine.
Prenatal: OLYMPIC-CALIBER INSTRUCTION
Summer Sanders' Prenatal Workout
The scoop Summer Sanders, a four-time Olympic medalist swimmer, and her sister-in-law, a professional fitness trainer, lead you through a cardio routine appropriate for all stages of pregnancy as well as trimester-specific toning moves in this 160-minute DVD.
Prenatal: PILATES FOR THE PEOPLE
10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates
The scoop Pilates instructor Lizbeth Garcia demonstrates five 10-minute exercise sets—such as "Pilates for Buns & Thighs" and "Core Pilates"—while 36 weeks pregnant. The sets can be done separately or strung together for a 50-minute session. While several of the moves require hand weights, the "Pilates for Flexibility" segment seems the most true to traditional Pilates.
Prenatal: MOVE IT TO LOSE IT
Denise Austin's Fit & Firm Pregnancy
The scoop Austin leads moms-to-be through an upbeat 20-minute cardio workout, then targeted heart- and muscle-toning moves appropriate for each stage of pregnancy. There's even a 10-minute bonus postnatal core workout.
Postnatal: JOIN IN, BABY!
The Studio by Ellen Barrett: Happy Baby, Fit Mama!
The scoop In the first 10-minute section, Barrett wears her adorable baby, 7-month-old Luca, in a front pack as she does gentle cardio moves; then he's snoozing in a stroller for 10 minutes of standing abdominal moves.
Postnatal: INNER PEACE, OUTER BEAUTY
Element: Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga
The scoop Escape to a flower-filled poolside spot overlooking the ocean as you're led through poses by yoga instructor (and mom) Elena Brower, who demonstrates the postnatal poses; a pregnant yogini leads the prenatal moves. (Note: It's high on the "woo-woo" yoga-style meter.)
Postnatal: BEFORE & AFTER
Quick Fix: Pre & Post Natal Workouts
The scoop Aerobics instructor Nancy Popp's dance background is evident as she gracefully leads you through toning exercises using filled water bottles and pillows—no balls, bands or weights needed. Features three 10-minute prenatal routines and three 10-minute postnatal ones.
Postnatal: GIVE YOURSELF A BOOST
New Mommy Makeover, Phase One
The scoop The first in a three-DVD series and part of a weight-loss package, these three 30-minute full-body workouts are a mix of strength-training exercises interspersed with quick bursts of cardiovascular moves like jumping jacks. Prenatal and postnatal fitness instructor Colleen Riddle is encouraging and unintimidating, explaining proper technique as she acts as your trainer.
Postnatal: BOOTY-KICKIN' WORKOUT
Nikkifitness Baby Bootie Camp
The scoop This poolside workout overlooking a beach gets you up and movin'! Fitness instructor Nikki Glor filmed it just four months after delivering her son via Cesarean section. Yet she busts through lunges, dips and squats for a muscle-fatiguing workout, often using her son as an added weight.
Postnatal: TOUGH LOVE TO TIGHTEN AND TONE
Tracey Mallett Presents Get Your Body Back
The scoop This DVD gets your rear in gear—and
firmed up—yet takes a smart, graduated approach. The cardio-with-weights workouts are divided into an easier phase one and a tougher phase two, with a demanding bonus track dubbed "Baby Cellulite Blaster."
Prenatal DVD: ROCK-A-BYE, BABY
Patricia Friberg Belly Beautiful Workout
The scoop Veteran fitness instructor Patricia Friberg emphasizes posture and alignment to help moms-to-be feel more comfortable during pregnancy. Enjoy soothing music during exercise ball and resistance band moves, and a bonus set of exercises is aimed at preventing diastasis recti.
