"Some acne medicines absolutely should not be used during pregnancy," says Doris Day, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. Accutane, which may cause birth defects, and any other vitamin-A-derived treatment (such as Renova and Retin-A) should be shelved until after pregnancy.
