2.28.08: Crib Recall: Munire Furniture Recalls Cribs Due to Falling Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Munire Furniture, has voluntarily recalled about 24,000 units of cribs, including the Majestic Curved Top and Flat Top Cribs, Essex Cribs, Brighton/Sussex Cribs and Captiva Cribs.

The cribs fail to meet federal safety standards because four support brackets on the mattress support spring are too long, preventing the spring from lowering to the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position. While no injuries have been reported, this has the potential to allow children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a falling hazard.

The recalled cribs are wooden and include: Majestic Curved Top cribs with model number 9500; Majestic Flat Top cribs with model number 9000; Essex cribs with model number 7100; Brighton/Sussex cribs with model number 9100 and Captiva cribs with model number 5100. Only cribs with manufacture dates between November 1, 2005 and November 1, 2007 are included in the recall. The crib model number is printed on the white label on the bottom inside of the right side rail. The crib manufacture date is printed on either the white label near the model number or on the white label located on the bottom of the headboard. Cribs with a green sticker on the mattress frame are not included in the recall.

The cribs were manufactured in Indonesia and sold at specialty juvenile product stores nationwide from November 2005 through November 2007 for between $400 and $600.

Consumers should stop using the recalled cribs and contact Munire Furniture (866-586-9639 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET; www.munirefurniture.com) to receive replacement spring brackets.

1.10.08: BabyTown Pacifiers Recalled Due to Choking Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Shims Bargain Inc., of Los Angeles, California announced a voluntary recall of "BabyTown" Pacifiers on January 10, 2008, due to a choking hazard. The pacifiers fail to meet federal safety standards: the shield is too small and could easily enter the mouth of an infant; the ventilation holes are too small and not placed to allow for the insertion of a tool to remove the pacifier when lodged in the mouth of a child; and the package fails to display the required warning instructing consumers not to tie a pacifier around a child's neck, which would present a strangulation hazard.

The recalled pacifiers were sold in a 4-pack of assorted colors. "BabyTown" and model #39864 are written on the product's packaging. They were manufactured in China and sold at Dollar stores nationwide from March 2004 through December 2007 for $1.

Consumers should take these pacifiers away from children immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. For additional information, contact Shims Bargain toll-free at (866) 540-3334 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.
