06.15.11: Leo is: lucky he has such an amazing daddy.
“I’ve been spending too much money getting lunch out,” Aaron said forlornly last night. This is a sad state. I am a lunch lady for crying out loud. This means two things: I have not been cooking meals frequently enough for Aaron to have good leftovers to bring to work; and moreover, I have not been taking good care of my number one honey.
My lunch lady gig ends in a week, and I’m slammed with freelance, so somehow, though I spend all day serving lunch and most nights and weekends developing recipes, my own family is not getting enough attention. Sure, dinner happens. Breakfast, well actually, only Leo eats breakfast these days, and he just has a bowl of Cheerios and raisins with some fruit on the side. But I’m too busy making food for work, and Aaron, who picks up the slack around the house when I’m working, who takes Leo on outings and bathes him most nights and does most of the laundry and usually empties the dishwasher…Aaron needs better taking care of.
I of all people should know that when a person puts in an inordinate amount of time taking care of another person or two, they begin to really need coddling. Or at least recognition. This weekend being Father’s Day, it’s about time I get started. I’m starting with lunches (because frankly, he found the granola I made him for Father’s Day last year unsettlingly crunchy). So I’ve packed Aaron a salami sandwich with mustard and a container of marinated chickpeas (LINK) over spinach. And I’m wracking my brains for nice Father’s Day presents. A manly lunch bag? A tiny personal fan for his airless office? Tina Fey’s new memoir Bossypants? How are you going to celebrate the daddy in your life?
