Experts usually advise limiting dental care to pregnant women in order to prevent harm to the fetus or discomfort for the mother. But for women with gum disease, having intensive teeth cleaning in the second and third trimesters is both safe and effective, say doctors at the University of Kentucky. While their study failed to show that treating gum disease reduces the risk of preterm birth, as some research has suggested, it also failed to find a connection between dental care and pregnancy complications.
