Summer is for Kids

6.30.10: Leo's 25th Month

I am really enjoying Leo’s company lately. For one, he’s really into food. We make smoothies together in the morning, he climbs up on a chair to help with dinner every night, and he eats like a horse. My kind of guy. I’ve learned to accommodate his vegetable interests by incorporating some subtler, softer veggies, like green beans that slow-cook in our coconut rice pilaf, and Leo is becoming be a bit more open-minded about what he eats.

He’s also talking more, so we can actually sit at the table eating breakfast and discussing literature. His favorite book right now is What the Cat Saw, a gorgeous and very intimate book about a family’s day and what their cat sees while the humans are busy with their own lives.

Next week Leo will switch from being full-time at school to attending 3 days per week, so we’ll be home together on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’m looking forward to it. We’ll take the cat to the vet next Tuesday, we’ll go to the pool, meet up with our playgroup, pick up our CSA veggies and do some more cooking projects, which I hope to share here. I want this summer to feel free, and full of water and sun and running outside for Leo, not to mention picnics and frozen treats.

Of course, I want those things too. Who doesn’t miss the summer vacations of childhood? Taking the time to be with Leo feels like a privilege to me, and it’s also a tiny bit scary. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my career lately, and Aaron and I have done a lot of talking about my goals and options.

It would be so easy to slip into having little direction and less drive professionally, but as my mom reminds me, in 15 years or so (and she promises they go by fast!) Leo will be much more independent and I’ll have time to re-examine my priorities. I hope to be doing work that I love by then, and I aim to figure out what that means sooner, rather than later. Maybe I’ll manage to find a little more perspective and peace with all this while I’m running through the sprinkler this summer. I think it will be a refreshing change of pace.
