2.23.09: Help Fit Pregnancy support CARE

Here's one simple way you can help mothers all over the world: Go to the movies. On March 5th, CARE, ONE and other humanitarian organizations are sponsoring a live screening of A Powerful Noise in honor of International Women's Day.

This documentary takes you inside the lives of three women from three different parts of the world as they live and work in the face of HIV/AIDS, illiteracy and forced labor practices and the fall-out of war. Bui My Hanh, an HIV positive widow from Vietnam formed Immortal Flower, a support group for men and women living with HIV/AIDS. Jacqueline Dembele, stands up for impoverished girls in Mali, Africa, providing them with basic education, vocational skills and advocacy in the face of unfair and abusive work situations. Nada Markovic is a working mother who survived mass genocide in the Bosnian war. She formed cooperatives for Serbian and Bosnian women to work together, providing agricultural markets, educational opportunities and community events that knit both cultures together. They're women like us, with quiet voices and big hearts, just trying to make the world a better place to live. Their combined stories make a Powerful Noise.

After the film, a live panel discussion featuring Christy Turlington Burns, model, CARE ambassador for maternal health and businesswoman; Nicholas Kristof, columnist for the New York Times; Madeleine K. Albright, Former U.S. Secretary of State and Dr. Helene Gayle, CARE President and CEO as they discuss ways we can work together to support women and families all over the world. Check out A Powerful Noise and find a theater near you. Invite your friends, family and community organizations and support CARE, ONE and International Women's Day.
