Angelina Stops Breastfeeding
11.20.08: Brad gushes about fatherhood on "Oprah"
Double the fun, but also double the trouble. That's the word from actress Angelina Jolie when it comes to breastfeeding her twins, People magazine reports. After three months of nursing, the mom-half of the dynamic duo known as "Brangelina" said she's weaned twins Knox and Vivienne, now 4 months old. The twins are the youngest of her six children with the dad-half of the duo, actor Brad Pitt.
"It was about as much as I could do. ... I would take turns. It just takes a long time," Jolie said on Britain's GMTV. "It's very hard. ... And it's a lot harder than it looks in the books."
Jolie was pictured on the November cover of W magazine breastfeeding one of her twins, sparking a buzz—both positive and negative. Nursing advocates praised Jolie for using her celebrity and raising awareness about breastfeeding in a natural and tasteful way. Inside had intimate photos of her and the family touted as private shots taken by Pitt himself. (Don't forget W is the same magazine that featured the pair in 2005 pre-baby images that set off the early talk of Jolie and Pitt as a new couple.)
Meanwhile, Pitt was on The Oprah Winfrey Show this week touting the other hectic aspects of life with their large brood, which also includes Maddox, 7; Pax, who turns 5 on Nov. 29; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2.
"It's like a half-hour just to get everyone buckled in and make sure they've got their snacks," the proud dad said on Wednesday's show.
Plus, as he readily admits, his children deserve credit for making him "hard as nails" when it comes to dealing with bodily fluids. "I'm impervious to poo, snot, urine, vomit," Pitt told Oprah.
Glad to hear that being a hands-on dad is important to Pitt. Fatherhood has many wonderful joys—baby poop and all. For more useful dad tips and stories from the trenches, direct your partner over to our Fatherhood section.
Breastfeeding offers so many benefits for mom and baby, I could go on and on. But as one expert in our Breast Is Still Best feature said: "Going past 2 months of age is an important milestone." So we can't hate on Jolie too much, right?
