Celebrity Mom-To-Be Drops Vegan Diet—For Now
04.14.11 Natalie Portman reveals that pregnancy cravings made her temporarily stop being a vegan.
The web is buzzing this week around the news that actress Natalie Portman has decided to give up veganism during her pregnancy, according to reports in US Weekly magazine, the website Popeater and various news outlets. The pregnant Oscar winner is now a vegetarian, the articles report.
Portman, who's expecting a baby later this summer, recently told a radio station in Atlanta that she went back to being a vegetarian when she became pregnant because she was craving certain foods not in line with her vegan eating habits. "I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of thing," the actress is quoted as saying during the radio interview.
Portman acknowledged that many women do stay vegan while expecting, but it wasn't a right fit for her at this time. Especially, she said, because "if you're not eating eggs, then you can't have cookies or cake from regular bakeries, which can become a problem when that's all you want to eat!"
Vegan and vegetarian pregnancies can be just as healthful for mom and baby, you just have to pay extra attention to your intake of crucial prenatal nutrients, such as iron and B12. Browse through our Nine Meatless Months page for tips on how to have a healthy pregnancy as a vegan or vegetarian.
Or you can try our Flexitarian Diet. Shifting the way you eat during pregnancy can give you more of the nutrients you and your developing baby need, whether you're a vegetarian or a meat-eater (which, as we reported, is reportedly the way to have a baby who cries less).
