More Than Ice Chips OK In Labor
08.26.09 Health experts give go-ahead for low-risk expectant women to drink liquids on the big day
Thirsty moms-to-be, rejoice! The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has given the green light for women to drink some liquids during an uncomplicated labor, Health Day News reports. The thirst-quenching list now includes water, soda, fruit juice without pulp, sports drinks, coffee and tea. Fluids with food particles, such as soup, should still be avoided.
Previously, women were limited to ice chips to keep food and liquid from entering the lungs in case of an emergency anesthetization. ACOG still says that women having a planned surgery, whether it's a Cesarean section or a tubal ligation after birth, may need to be restricted on a case-by-case basis.
What about food? Well how about reading it directly from an expert! Our Ask the Labor Nurse blogger tackles the "What to Eat While in Labor" question with the intention of reminding moms-to-be that there are no silly questions ... so ask away!
