How it can hurt
Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, ecstasy and other illegal drugs can cause miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight, birth defects, learning disabilities, behavioral problems, heart defects, mental retardation, placental damage and SIDS, according to the March of Dimes. Babies born to mothers who use drugs can be addicted at birth and may suffer from withdrawal.
Why tell your doctor
The sooner you quit, the better for both of you, Green says. Your physician can refer you to a substance-abuse treatment program.
