Call it what you want (delicacy or gross come to mind), but a New York chef has created the "It" food of the moment—breast milk cheese. Restaurant owner and chef Daniel Angerer recently took the unusual step of using wife Lori Mason's breast milk to make cheese, New York magazine reports.
Angerer said he was curious about it in terms of flavor, so he figured "Why not?" He was so excited about making the cheese, he blogged about his new creation. Word spread about his cheese and customers at his restaurant, Klee Brasserie, began demanding to have a taste, the New York Post reports. It was so popular, TV host Kelly Ripa and guest Andy Richter tasted the special cheese live on "Live with Regis and Kelly" show.
But of course, there's been some backlash. New York City health officials are warning that the breast milk cheese is "not intented for adults, or for wide public consumption," the New York Post reports. City officials did say that Angerer is free to do anything with the cheese in his home, but he should not distribute it to customers inside his restaurant, as it is a health department violation.
Angerer and Mason have no intentions of selling the cheese, but they do insist that the cheese is perfectly healthy and more wholesome than anything sold at any grocery store, according to the Post.
