It's another boy for Benedict and his wife, Sophie. Get the inside scoop on their baby name pick!
It's a boy for Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife, Sophie, who welcomed their second son on March 3rd. Joining big brother Christopher "Kit" Carlton is another son, Hal Auden.
Hal is a common nickname for Harold or Henry—it was used extensively in Shakespeare's Henry IV plays, as a nickname for young Henry V. Henry and Harold both mean "ruler," but vary wildly in popularity—Harold is in the bottom of the top 1000, while Henry is currently in the top 30 baby names in the U.S.
Their new son's middle name, Auden, is a surname name, perhaps a homage to famous poet W.H. Auden. It means "old friend," and makes a lovely alternative to the over-popular Aiden/Aidan.
I kind of love how their baby names pay tribute to some literary giants ("Kit" was the nickname for revered playwright Christopher Marlowe, a contemporary of Shakespeare), and wonder what they'd pick for a daughter—perhaps Ophelia or Viola after Shakespeare's heroines, or Emily or Jane in honor of poet Emily Dickinson or author Jane Austen.
