Zooey Deschanel says she named her three-month-old baby girl after a sea mammal. Why? because she and her husband really like otters. Perfect reason for a baby name.
When it comes to celebrity baby names, off-the-wall monikers are as common as stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Just recently, we've seen a Briar Rose (Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen), Wyatt for a baby girl (Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher), Royal Reign (Lil' Kim and Papers) and Apollo Bowie Flynn (Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale). And, now, the newest unique baby name out of Tinsel Town? Elsie Otter, the 3-month-old daughter of actress Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik.
Different? For sure. But we think the New Girl actress—called "adorkable" by her loving fans—gave her baby an equally "adorkable" middle name.
"I love otters. My husband loves otters. She better love otters," Deschanel recently told Today.
And why the animal marine mammal moniker?
"We just really liked the name Elsie and then we both love otters—they're very sweet and they're also smart," she told the morning show. "They use tools ... they hold hands while they sleep, there's so many amazing things about otters. They're wonderful animals."
Elsie, it turns out, ranked 336 on the most popular name list for baby girls in 2014, according to the Social Security Administration. (It peaked at No. 35 in 1901.)
Otter, on the other hand, has never broken the top 1,000 list, and Animal House pledge name aside, we can't recall ever hearing it used as a name before. Of course, the name Madison was novel when Splash hit the big screen, so you never know. The graduating class of 2033 might just be filled with Otters. Or maybe not.
