The Internet is up in arms over a photo of a woman breastfeeding a stranger's baby—how do you feel about this?
Rebecca Wanosik was enjoying a normal night at home when a friend sent a request her way: Would she be willing to breastfeed a stranger's child? The baby's mother was going into surgery and wouldn't be able to nurse, but the baby in question refused to take the bottle. Wanosik accepted the request, then shared a photo of herself feeding her own child and the stranger's in tandem...and Facebook suspended her account because of it.
Wanosik is now back on social media, and she's understandly upset that she was removed from the platform for posting the photo. "When the baby arrived you could tell she was hungry and exhausted and just needed some milk. I did what I hope any person would do for my child in a time of despair. I fed a stranger's baby. I was so surprised by just how many people thought was weird, or unnatural. They are boobs, they are meant to feed babies. Also, in case anyone forgot, they are mine, so I'm fairly certain I choose what happens with them," she posted of the experience.
Countless outlets have shared Wasonik's story, and plenty of social media users have come forth to praise the mother for doing something selfless for a hungry, helpless child—but not everyone is on board with her actions. Several users apparently flagged the photo as innappropriate, which led to her account being shut down—we're so glad to see that she was able to reactivate, because this story is pretty beautiful.
Feeding a stranger's baby might seem strange to some, but the concept of wet nursing (or feeding another woman's child) has been around for ages. It's not like Wasonik did this for no real reason; she was helping a baby who may have otherwise gone hungry. How can anyone hate on that? We say, as long as this baby's mom was on board with this solution, Wasonik has absolutely nothing to apologize for—we might even call her something of a hero.
How do you feel about what this mama did? Would you ever breastfeed a stranger's baby if the situation called for it?
