Leo's 33rd Month
You know how people say things like the busiest times are the best and all that? To them, I say: Last week, for three glorious days and two sweet, peaceful nights, I went ON VACATION!!! Oh man was that a good idea.
Here's what happened: a few months ago, Aaron went on tour with his trio. When he got home I announced I would be going. Where? Just going. I dialed it back a bit and actually planned a trip: a brief, cross-country ski/lying around by the fire trip with my mom, during her mid-winter break (she's an art teacher). So Aaron's stepdad came up to help out, and off I went to do the unthinkable: not much of anything.
We skied, briefly. We slept, enough. Enough! With an extra little nap here and there just because! And we ate. Copiously! Because, you know, all that exercise...
The funny thing is we chose a very family-friendly, wholesome, sort of hippyish place to stay and ski, with kids all over and the whole time I was there I kept thinking 'Gee, Aaron and Leo would just love this. We gotta come back!' The food was a real highlight, particularly because it was so family-friendly, wholesome and hippyish. And the wholesome families there all seemed to love it.
What I enjoyed most about the great meals served (other than the fact that they were SERVED! At regular intervals—all we did was SHOW UP!) was that they incorporated whole grains, vegetables and beans, and also seemed to offer up options for any and every kind of eater. I particularly loved their "kale-sa-dillas," made with sweet caramelized onions, kale and plenty of cheese on lovely whole wheat tortillas. We had them with soup and homemade salsa and refried beans, and I was eager to try them at home.
Of course, a fireplace, scrabble game, nap and peace and quiet did not settle upon us as I griddled the kale-sa-dillas. And, though I chopped the kale well, Leo still carefully extracted each leaf before eating his tortillas and cheese. Ah well, I have been on vacation, and I won't soon forget the feeling.
