Model Chrissy Teigen came clean about the reason she and husband/singer/songwriter John Legend decided to have a daughter, saying her husband 'deserves that bond.'
Chrissy Teigen has been very open about the fact that she conceived via in vitro fertilization. We totally applaud her constant honesty—and now she's come out with yet another admission about her pregnancy.
"I've made this decision," the model told PEOPLE. "Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, 'Let's put in the girl.' "
Chrissy went on to explain why she chose to have a baby girl—and the reason has a lot to do with husband, John Legend.
"I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me," she said. "It excited me to see ... just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond. A boy will come along. We'll get there too, so it's not like we really have to pick. But he definitely is very lucky to have a little girl. And this girl is going to be so completely lucky to have John as her papa—it's crazy!"
She also cited "how soft [fathers] get" when they have daughters as part of the reason she decided to have a baby girl.
The 'designer baby' debate
Chrissy's decision to choose her baby's sex might be controversial to some—not to mention reminiscent of her pregnancy role model, Kim Kardashian West's rumored use of genetic-based technology to ensure she and Kanye West would have a baby boy.
This is definitely a complicated issue—some might argue that there are sexist implications, while others feel that gender can be fluid and the experience of raising a baby boy shouldn't be so inherently different than the experience of a raising a daughter. You could also say a mother should be grateful for any child, regardless of the baby's sex. Should we live in a world in which people can choose the sex of their children? That's up for debate—but at the end of the day, it's Chrissy life, body, and pregnancy.
We're guessing the star won't let anyone else's opinions get to her. After all, this is woman who has been super-vocal in the past about how internet haters should not have a say in how she conducts her pregnancy. For now, she's just focusing on getting herself ready for parenthood.
"I'm excited to see what he is going to do because I think we'll have two very different styles. I'm excited to see that part of John; We've been together so long, and sometimes we look at each other and we're like, 'I know everything about you and you know everything about me,' but we have no idea what we're going to be like as parents. I think it'll be really fun. I'm excited," she said.
