Kim Kardashian Reveals Placenta Problems

A rare health condition caused by her placenta attaching to her uterus could stand in the way of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West giving North a baby sister or brother.

The Kardashians are giving us all a lesson in the power of the placenta lately. Kourtney touted its healing benefits when she recently admitted to taking "life-changing" placenta pills, while on a less positive note, Kim has just revealed a health complication from her placenta that could stand in the way of having a second child.

Kim Kardashian West has never hidden her desire for another baby after giving birth to North West in 2013, even admitting to having sex "500 times a day" with hubby Kanye West to get there.

But in the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the 34-year-old reality star told Kanye that she may not be able to carry a second baby to term without putting her life at risk.

The problem, she said, is her "placenta grew onto [her] uterus" and the "worst-case scenario" means she could have to be rushed into the emergency room straight after giving birth to have her uterus removed.

Placenta Problems

What Kardashian describes sounds like placenta accreta, placenta increta or placenta percreta, depending on how deeply the placenta attached itself into the wall of the uterus.

These are rare conditions, affecting only 1 in 2,500 pregnancies, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Their cause is unknown and there's nothing a woman can do to prevent them. Although a cesarean delivery increases the possibility of a placenta accreta-type condition, Kim's natural birth with North shows that it can occur no matter what kind of delivery a woman has.

If diagnosed before she gives birth, the mom-to-be usually undergoes a c-section combined with a special delivery procedure that spares the uterus. In rare cases, if it's severe enough (and let's hope Kim's isn't) she may need a hysterectomy.

Kardashian says her doctors have even advised her to consider surrogacy, but she is not interested, despite mom Kris Jenner mentioning that mom-of-three Kourtney, 35, "would probably do it."

Instead, Kim has decided to undergo surgery to give North a sibling. The latest episode ended with a "To Be Continued..." as she was brought into the operating room.
