Serena Williams's Pregnancy Reveal Was One Big Social Media Slip-Up

Serena Williams announced her pregnancy on Snapchat...without actually meaning to share the news. Sounds crazy? It might not be such an uncommon mistake.

Serena Williams made headlines when she announced her pregnancy on Snapchat—but as it turns out, she didn't mean to share her news when she did.

The athlete accidentally added a selfie showcasing her growing baby bump to her Snapchat story—and while the nature of Snapchat means the photo didn't remain visible to the public for very long, the damage was done: The world knew Serena was expecting.

The good news? The tennis legend was already 20 weeks along when she slipped up, and records indicate she was planning to break the news to the public soon anyway.

"I was on vacation, taking time for myself, and I have this thing where I've been checking my status and taking a picture every week," Serena said during an appearance at the  TED2017 Conference. "I've been just saving it, but you know how social media is...you press the wrong button and...My phone doesn't ring that much, and 30 minutes later, I'd missed four calls. So I picked it up and realized, 'Oh no.'"

It may sound like a big mistake to make, but honestly? We get it. For one thing, Serena's point about taking regular selfies to document her pregnancy—so, so many women do this, and whether they accidentally end up posting a photo online (blame pregnancy brain!) or mistakenly flash the photo to a friend while meeting up in person, the whole notion of revealing a pregnancy before you planned to is a very real possibility. And let's not forget that Snapchat can be a tricky little tool—even the fiancée of a tech mogul isn't a immune to that oops-I-accidentally-added-something-to-my-public-story moment!

Even if you don't accidentally announce your pregnancy on social media, there's always the chance you'll let the news slip during a conversation or give away your secret in some other way (ahem, getting caught while sipping Sprite at happy hour). Another very real possibility? You tell a family member the news...and 10 minutes later, there's a congratulatory post on your Facebook page.

The bottom line? The accidental pregnancy reveal is real, and we're positive Serena Williams isn't the only person who has had this experience.

Did you accidentally reveal your pregnancy at any point?
