The Real Reason Michael Phelps Named His Son Boomer

It's not a regular name, it's a cool name.

Michael Phelps and his fiancée, Nicole Johnson, had one thing in mind when choosing a name for their first child: They wanted something that didn't feel "normal." Mission accomplished: We can't say we've ever met a person named "Boomer" before.

The retired Olympian opened up about the process of naming his son during an appearance on The Tonight Show. “We heard the name, and we didn’t want, like, a normal name,” he said. “And I brought it up to Nicole and she was like, ‘Oh, that sounds kinda cool."

The new parents fell for the name right away. "Boomer, like boom boom … we didn’t know either. We had no second option—once we picked that, we were like, ‘Yeah.' He’s definitely gonna be the cool kid," Michael told Jimmy Fallon.

We'd say baby Boomer (no pun intended) is already a "cool kid." He already has his very own Instagram account with over 700,000 followers, after all.

“He went from 5,000 followers in late June to … I think I just looked, and he has like 660,000 followers. It’s insane," Michael said. "He’s gotta be the most followed baby in the world!”

Boomer not only has more followers than any four-month-old we know, he's also already seen more of the world than most people view in their lifetimes. “We have a very busy year. But we’re excited and pumped, and the little man gets to travel everywhere with us, so it’s pretty awesome," Michael said. Pretty cool indeed.

What do you think of the name Boomer? Did you think about giving your kids "cool" names?
