The co-host of The View is under fire for making some off-color remarks about breastfeeding that didn't sit well with mothers and women everywhere.
Whoopi Goldberg does not hold back. The co-host of The View is notoriously opinionated and her most recent comments were as extreme as ever. But this time, they were about a topic many women have very, very strong feelings about: breastfeeding.
The discussion started with talk of cross-nursing, an issue that is understandably polarizing. "Breastfeeding can be tough for a lot of new mothers, so two Connecticut mothers are supporting each other by nursing each other's babies from time to time," she said by way of kicking off the conversation. The ladies on the show were divided—some said they would "do it for a close friend," others were understandably squeamish about the whole thing. But Whoopi's later comment was the most jaw-dropping of the whole segment.
"If they're old enough to have teeth, they should not be breastfeeding. Good God!," Whoopi said.
The comment prompted a wave or cheers and applause from the audience—but it rubbed countless mothers the wrong way.
For one thing, Whoopi's comment was incredibly judgmental... and it's not like we haven't seen enough judgment thrown at breastfeeding women. For another, Whoopi's joke was simply incorrect. One PopSugar writer pointed out that infants can start sprouting teeth at as early as three months old and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be breastfed until they're six months old. So yes—Whoopi's comment did have the power to make a woman second-guess her own plans for breastfeeding her own child.
But even for the many, many women out there who heard Whoopi's comment and chose to ignore it, opting instead to listen to advice from doctors or personal research, the comment still shouldn't fly. After all, a woman's relationship to breastfeeding is uniquely her own. When she does it, how long she does it, if she does it—that's up to her and her alone. Whoopi's comments were ignorant, offensive and just plan rude. It's that simple.
