You may remember the quirky actress gave her daughter a very quirky name—and she's explaining why and what it means to Ellen DeGeneres in a brand new video clip.
Everyone's favorite "adorkable" actress, Zooey Deschanel, had a baby girl last year and her name is—not surprisingly—quite original. The New Girl actress appeared on a recent episode of the The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss motherhood—she even shared the meaning behind her daughter's unusual name.
Zooey named her firstborn Elsie Otter. She welcomed Elsie over the summer along with her husband, Jacob Pechenik.
"Otter, like the otter?" Ellen asked of the baby's name. Zooey clarified that yes, it's otter like the animal. Ellen asked if it was a family name, to which Zooey replied: "In the sense that we're all mammals. No, we thought Elsie is kind of a classic name. A lot of people have grandmas and aunts name Elsie."
She elaborated on her choice. "I love animals so much," she said. "And we love otters because they're so cute, and playful and fun. And they're really smart."
Can't argue with that logic, right?
"She's so cute," Zooey gushed about her daughter. "She makes a lot of little, like, pterodactyl kind of noises -- like 'ahh, ooh, ahh' and a noise that sounds like choking," she added. "She'll be, like, 'ah, ah, ah.' And I'll be like, 'What's wrong?' and she'll be, like, 'ha, ha, ha!'"
