Couple Welcomes Sextuplets After 17 Years of Trying

Wow! This couple struggled to have a child for 17 years...and they got more than they could have ever imagined when they welcomed sextuplets.

Ajibola and Adeboye Taiwo tried to have a baby for a long time—17 years, to be exact. And while the wait was a long one, the couple's wish was finally answered when they got more than they ever expected: Six babies.

The couple, who is from West Nigeria, welcomed a set of sextuplets on May 11 at Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center.

According to USAToday, the couple saw four heartbeats in an ultrasound in November. They discovered there were two additional babies in there two months later.

If you're imagining that a sextuplet birth would be tough to coordinate...well, you're right. According to reports, it took a 40-person team to deliver the six babies via C-section. As we've reported, multiple births tend to occur prematurely, and the mother was 30 weeks along when she delivered. The babies weighed between 1 pound, 10 ten ounces and 2 pounds, 15 ounces and were born via C-section.

According to the hospital, the babies are all doing well and are being cared for at the hospital. The staff was undoubtedly challenged by this birth, but the new parents have come to view the medical team as family—after all, this staff made their dream come true in a way they probably never imagined.

"I hope for the smallest of my six children to grow up and say, 'I was so small, and look at me now,'" Ajibola told USAToday. "I want my kids (to) come back to VCU and study and learn to care for others with the same people who cared for me and my family."
