Selfie Shows What Post-Birth Really Looks Like

We've seen so many polished, filtered images of those first few minutes after birth—but this woman's raw selfie shows the reality of the situation.

When we hear about childbirth, we often hear words like "magical," "beautiful" and "miraculous" thrown around—and while all these words certainly apply to the unparalleled experience of literally creating life, they don't fully describe the reality of it.

Giving birth is also incredibly hard. It's painful, emotionally overwhelming and—as Distractify puts it—a hot mess.

A new mom posted a photo of herself in the aftermath of her delivery and, well...let's just say that it does a better job of accurately portraying the experience of childbirth than just about any other photo we've seen.

Erica Andrews snapped this selfie just 24 hours after giving birth. It's not just a realistic depiction of what that first day with baby is really like; it's also a powerful reminder to new mothers out there: You don't need to look perfectly put together right after giving birth. Andrews is showing off the less glamorous side of giving birth: The sagging skin, the messy hair, the baby pressed against the chest...even the adult diapers.

Her caption takes it to the next level: it touches taboo subjects and even mentions that "empty womb" feeling that is almost never discussed.

"This is what 24 hours postpartum looks like," she writes. "Baby in sling. Skin to skin. Adult diapers. And a rosy glow. My body feels like it ran a marathon and my heart is wide open from yesterday's travels...The emptiness in my womb brings a heavy feeling crashing into reality but then this new little life whimpers, searching for the breast with soft rooting, and I feel whole again. I am still processing the beautiful transition my whole family has traveled through and I am in complete awe of our strength as humans, women, and mothers. This time is simply unlike any other."
